HLSC 2130U – Public Health Microbiology

This course introduces students to the microbial world and serves as a foundation for understanding communicable diseases and public health. Students will learn about the different types of microorganisms, especially bacteria and viruses, that cause disease in humans but will also come to appreciate the importance of microorganisms in our daily lives. Students will learn about infectious disease transmission and best practices in infection control and prevention. Students will also examine the environmental and social determinants of health associated with infectious diseases in Canada and globally. An emphasis will be on investigating the risk factors, pathogens, and routes of invasion, and on understanding the increasing number of zoonotic/vector related infectious diseases.
