MLSC 3220U – Transfusion Science I


This course focuses on the specific knowledge and skills needed for practice in a blood transfusion laboratory, including legal and regulatory requirements related to the Canadian Society of Transfusion Medicine (CSTM). Students learn the basic concepts of blood group immunology, detection and identification of antibodies, and pre‐transfusion testing. Protocols for the collection, storage, preparation and testing of donor units, transfusion therapy and transfusion reactions will be examined. Some clinical conditions such as hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and transfusion‐transmitted disease will be discussed. Current technologies, automation, quality assurance, compliance, blood utilization and conservation used in the practice of transfusion medicine will be covered in this course.
